Your transition from gravure to flexo printing

21. April 2026

Rising procurement costs and fast-moving time-to-market cycles are demanding ever greater cost-efficiency and flexibility. For a long time, gravure printing was regarded as the undisputed king of quality for flexible packaging – but technological developments have long since changed the established landscape. Thanks to state-of-the-art flexo processes, brilliant print quality comparable to that of gravure printing can now be achieved. Its significantly greater cost-efficiency, in particular, makes it a very attractive option.

A lot has changed

What used to be referred to as “high-quality potato printing” is now a thing of the past. Thanks to high-definition technologies, we can achieve resolutions, gradient effects and image sharpness that are absolutely competitive with gravure printing.

Brilliance through opacity

Using a technique known as microscreening, we achieve a white coverage that was previously the preserve of gravure printing. This opacity (light-blocking property) forms the basis for the brilliance of the colours, particularly on transparent and fibre-based substrates. The key factor here is selecting the appropriate microscreening in relation to the substrate.

Printing forms for continuous printing

Do your designs contain elements that extend across the entire print image? Our photopolymer sleeves make borderless printing possible, even in flexographic printing.

Improved cost-efficiency

Whilst gravure cylinder production is time-consuming and costly, flexographic printing plates offer comparatively better value for money. This is particularly evident in cases of frequent design changes and small to medium print runs.

FAQ - Transition from gravure to flexographic printing

Yes! Thanks to our expertise in reproduction, we are able to precisely adapt the data to the specifications of flexographic printing. Drawing on the full range of our production capabilities for printing plates and sleeves, we use the ideal printing media setup for your designs. This means that any good flexographic printing company is able to reproduce the high print quality typically associated with gravure printing in flexographic printing as well.

We take care of all data handling and coordination processes. From the feasibility analysis to the qualification of print service providers and, if required, on-site support during print approval. This is how we manage and support the entire process.

Yes. From paper and thin films to composite materials – the combination of technically optimised imaging and print media that remain consistent across print runs ensures reproducibility regardless of the material.
